Temple to the Ego

It's so true... it's what blogs are.  But they're fun.  Long live my ego.  Blogs are always filled with silly information... like what somebody did all day in such detail only a keyboard would listen to.  Or it's vague babble about some inner turmoil... written in language that looks like it's trying to be subtle but really hints heavily at the fact one is having romantic issues... and there's the random fact post.  The rant.  The funny link to Youtube.  Ahhh blogs.  We adore thee.

Busy Bee

Everyone has to test their limits... how will we know where they are otherwise?

I've been hired at De Dutch as a waitress and I love it.  I want to stay at Safeway as well though, but have been going back and forth on whether or not to take a leave of absence or just do both.  On top of my 5 very hectic classes this semester, it's quite a workload.  And the Linguistics Student Union is another project I want to devote my attention to... I'm thinking of running for co-chair.  Hopefully that wont be too time consuming!

We've had so much company at out house lately!  It's been really fun though.  Neil is Ben's step-cousin's friend (?) whom we had never met, but invited to stay at our house with his girlfriend (an Aussie named Roxy) while they set up in Vancouver after living in Brisbane for a year.  They've been here a couple days and it's been a blast!  We really get on.  They've found themselves a place and it's looking really good for them.  Cody and his girlfriend also gave us a visit this weekend.  The house needs a bit of a cleanup now!

I've met so many new and interesting people this year that will hopefully become very good friends, if they hadn't already.  I'm really looking forward to the future while immensly enjoying the present!!

So this Fall, tentatively, looks like it will be shaping up like this:

LING 330- Phonetics.  I've been waiting to take this course for a long time, so if it fills up I'll be pretty mad.  The precurser to this course was one of my absolute favourite courses I've taken, cause we learned the international phonetic alphabet, and that's tonnes of fun.  "A survey of methods of speech sound description and transcriptionA survey of methods of speech sound description and transcription."   Ooooh my nerdy brain is tingling.

LING 360- Linguistics/Language Teaching.  "Theoretical and practical aspects of second language learning."  Sounds interesting, but one of the main reasons I want to take it is so I can get to know the teacher, who is in charge of the TESL program and head of the linguistics department.  First, I'll get him to really like me.  Then I'll DEMAND that Japanese 300 be brought about!!!!

ARCH 372- Material Culture Analysis.  You get to make stone tools!!!  I've been looking forward to taking this course for some time, and it's being taught by my favourite teacher (he looks like the guy from the discovery channel, wears a scarf, and uses his boomerang instead of a laser pointer).  It sounds like a tough course load but oh well.... "Analysis and interpretation of archaeological material culture. This lecture and laboratory course combines the practical problems of recognition and interpretation of archaeological specimens, typology, seriation, and statistical procedures with the basic principles of archaeological theory."

FREN 122- Yay I'm taking French again!  This is the third level, and I finished the equivalent of the second 3 years ago... alors j'espere j'ai n'oubli pas tout mon francais... woah I have some catching up to do...

PHIL 110- Logic and Reasoning.  Moannnnnnnn.... I really don't want to take this course, but if I want that liberal arts certificate, and I only need one course to complete it, this looks like the least painful course.  The actual material is fine.  It's the philosophy STUDENTS that I dont want to put up with.  Beligerant self obsessed know-it-alls who think they have the answer to all of life's problems if the lowly peasantry would just listen to all their rants.  Ughhhh...  can I just read the text and show up for the exam?  "The aim of this course is to familiarize students with fundamental techniques of correct reasoning. Special attention is given to the methods of logic in particular, and to their role in the discovery of truth not only within science and philosophy but within all forms of rational enquiry. Open to all students."  If I have to drop a course cause I'm overwhelmed... it will be this one.  It even has a tutorial portion so we can 'discuss' things.  Eeeeew...

So there it is.  The 5 courses that will ultimately bring my demise... or at least a lowered GPA....

Bitten By The Travel Bug

Ben and his dad have decided to head to South America for a second time this January, and plan to hike the Inca trail to Machu Pichu among other things.  Ben suggested I come too, which I would have greatly enjoyed, except for the fact I can't help think what a burden I'd become in one of those situations.  There would just be too many things for me to complain about on an expensive four day hike to an altitude I would surely be sick because of.  Believe it or not, travelling to Peru has always been one of my dreams.  When I was young I read an interesting story about a boy from Peru.  I used to have a pet llama.  And so many of my archaeology classes focus on the Incan empire and that area of the world.

Thinking about it though, I came up with a much better idea that sends tingles of excitement through my body whenever I think about it.  What are my interests?  Languages.  Am I completely enthralled with the idea of learning Spanish, the most beautiful language I believe there to be?  Yes!  And so, why don't I treat this as an opportunity... while Ben and his dad travel to Peru to exaust themselves physically, I want to travel to Peru to exaust myself mentally, and experience two weeks of intensive Spanish learning at one of the schools featured here: http://www.spanishabroad.com

It's perfect!  around 300 dollars a week gets me a homestay, 3 meals a day, and 4 hours of intense Spanish classes Monday-Friday in either Lima or beautiful Cuzco!  I can head down with the boys and travel to Cuzco with them, and as they embark on their hike, I embark on opening up another world learning another langauge.  Then as they plan to stay for longer than I'd prefer, I could just head back after two weeks, or as long as I can make my money stretch.

The only problem is I've already sent of my student loan stating that I'll be studying full time in the Spring.  So either I'm going to be skipping some classes or I better figure out how to change that.  Or I'll just give up on the whole thing and go some other time.  A flight to Mexico would be so much cheaper...
